Yin yoga is often described as the other half of a yoga practice.
A yin yoga practice is a slower practice involving longer, deeper holds. It works with affecting the connective tissues of the body. Deep releases are experienced as tension and stress dissolve from the body.
Yin yoga has the same goals and objectives as any other type of yoga; however, it directs the stimulation normally created in the asana (poses) portion of the practice deeper than the superficial, or muscular, tissues (which we are calling the yang tissues). Areas of your body that aren't exercised very much in a more active style of yoga are targeted, such as ligaments, joints and even bones.
Suitable for all levels, yin yoga is a perfect complement to teh dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasise internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Specific areas targeted by yin yoga are generally tissue of the hips, pelvis and lower spine.
You will especially benefit from this type of yoga if you're a active sports-person, dancer or hold lots of stress and tension in your body.
