I've just watched an insightful documentary that's full of scientific evidence and theories from scientists and beekeepers across the world, and it has highlighted why we should worry about the phenomenom known as Colony Collapse Disorder.
Bees are said to
In a nutshell, bees are a major contributor to food production via pollination. An average of one third of the food on our plates comes from pollination via bees. They are bred and moved around countries specifically to help farmers. Farms that use chemical pesticides are killing the bees... not straight-out, hence why pesticides haven't all been banned, but the effect accumulate through the generations and cause abnormalities such as brain function that lead to death. When this happens the fruit and vegetable production declines... not good for our future outlook.
I encourage you to watch this documentary to form an opinion of your own - you can hire it from Manly Library and if you need a prompt as to why you should watch it take heed of this quote from Daniel Etherington, from Channel 4 " An essential documentary... If you like eating, see this film".
You can find more information www.vanishingbees.com including how we can take responsibility ourselves. Actions that can help sustain our future food sources include planting your own fruit and veggie patch, get your own bee hive, buy organic and use organic pest controls.
While in a perfect world we'd go out and do all these things I know myself that time and money discourage me from buying organic, so I'm going to take the time to look into how I might make organic produce more accessible to me and you guys too.
