Do you say namaste, and/or know what it means? Or is is just something you mumble because other people do?
Like many words in Sanskrit - the ancient yoga language - it has various translations of meaning. One of the more commonly referred to being:
"the divine in me honours the divine in you" and is used as a sign of respect.
For me it's about saying thank you; to those sharing my yoga practice, for the ability to be able to practice yoga and for those I have learnt from.
There is no expectation in my class to hear it repeated back to me, so if you don't feel comfortable saying it that's ok.
It's often one of those things that people new to yoga don't ask about, but I welcome questions and discussion about things like that, so please just ask if you'd like to know more about any aspect of yoga. If you forget to ask when you see me, or would rather not ask in front of people, please drop me an email. If you have a question it's almost guaranteed that someone else has it too, so I'll most probably blog about it to share the knowledge.
