To make sure you stay smiling through Winter here are my top 5 tips to help you beat the Winter blues:
1. Eat Wholesome Soups and Stews
Healthy eating and a good diet is a key ingredient to a happy, healthy life and helps stave off the bad food cravings of grabbing a meat pie, that really don't do us any favours. Being prepared is the key and my slow cooker has been in full swing lately. The best thing is that I can pack wholesome healthy foods like lentils, barley and heaps of veggies into the slow cooker before I leave the house and when I get home in the evening I have a hot dinner waiting for me. Another benefit is that soups and stews are a great way to get much-needed water into your diet when drinking cold water is not very appealing.
2. Have a Sun Break
While the mornings and evenings around the Northern Beaches are undoubtedly chilly, the middle of the day still often brings delightful sunshine throughout the whole of Winter. So do yourself a favour and schedule a 15 minute sun break at some point each day. The benefits of being in natural light and feeling the warmth against your skin are far greater than just getting the added Vitamin D that your body is craving right now.
3. Make Plans to See Friends
Hiding under a doona and watching mind-dumbing TV can lead to a downward spiral. So make one plan this week to see a friend. It can just be simple. Recently I popped over to see a friend for Mulled Wine and snacks and we had a great time.
I've noticed that around Manly there are many people that have extended holidays overseas to visit relatives, so if you've noticed your list of available friends has dwindled recently fear not, just pop to the studio for an extra yoga or dance class and hang out with our local community here.
4. Streeeeeeetch Your Body
Becoming huddled over and less active during Winter can make you feel bad, so get some yoga into your day and keep your posture and mind open. Adding a few simple yoga postures to your morning or evening routine can work wonders for your motivation. Although I wouldn't recommend Down-face Dog while you're brushing your teeth, at risk of toothpaste dribble filling up your nose.
5. Stay Hydrated
Dry lizard-like skin and cracked lips never make you feel good about yourself and they're an indication that you're not getting enough water in your diet. Being in an artificially heated environment and even drinking more tea and coffee can dehydrate your skin because they are diuretics (things that make you wee more often). Recently I surprised myself by liking plain hot water. It has the double benefits of warming me up and keeping me hydrated.
