With all the activities we undertake it can seem impossible to relax, unwind and just stop being so tense.
You might think that watching TV, playing video games or surfing the net is your relaxation time but if anything, that will only add to your stress levels; which we will discuss in a later article.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for hard work - I'm an ASCA Strength and Conditioning Coach, and very strict when it comes to being a Personal Trainer - but to get the most out of your life you need to find a balance between the hard-core physical exercises and the relaxation, stretching exercises.
In fact, stretching helps you get more out of your muscles and can even increase you power output, and just a 10 minute Savasana relaxation is likened by many esteemed Yogis to 4 hours of sleep - how's that for efficiency?
Keeping all this in mind, we're really limiting ourselves if we don't include some of this type of exercise in our fitness mix, and yoga is the best way to get what we need.
All of our yoga classes at Maitri Fitness have stretching and at least 5-10 minutes of relaxation, but we've developed the perfect class that just focusses on relaxing and stretching - hence the name "De-Stress and Relax Yoga". During this special class you'll be staying low to the floor, connect your breathing with your movement and often using props to help keep you comfortable. It's a mixture of Restorative and Hatha yoga poses with Pranayama (breathing) and Meditation.
Do yourself a favour and book into at least one yoga class per week - start off with a class listed as "Yoga" (this is a Hatha/Vinyasa mix) if you think a whole class of relaxation is currently a bit beyond you. That way you get a strength workout in there too!
You don't need to have done yoga before and you don't need to be flexible... coming to yoga helps with that.
