When we were talking she mentioned that in her early yoga days (40 years ago), it was frowned upon for anyone to clap at the end of class. I can understand this because there's supposed to be no ego in yoga, and clapping is a form of massaging one's ego.
Personally, I often get a little embarrassed when people clap, but it does give me a little fuzzy feeling. I always make sure I share the clap back with the class for it's the whole class who have made the experience a positive one, so they should share in the applause.
In a yoga class, once I invite people to open their eyes I usually say thank you. Sometimes I feel a bit awkward saying this because I usually get an automatic thank you as a response and I don't want people to think I'm suggesting they should thank me. It's all about sharing the class experience together and I like thanking people for coming and taking part.
What are your thoughts on clapping after a class? Have you ever started clapping and found no-one else joined in? Do you only follow if others clap, or do you think clapping is against the yoga way?
