Did you know that speaking a foreign language is a great advantage for the cognitive process and brings several mental benefits?
If we think that we need to exercise our body to get stronger and healthier, we should do the same with our brain, and memorizing rules and vocabulary could be a good and useful option.
As well as training our mind we’ll be able to speak to someone else during our holiday overseas!
I would like to highlight some of the advantages that I think can help everyday life:
- Speaking a foreign language improves the functionality of your brain by challenging it to recognize, negotiate meaning, and communicate in different language systems. This skill boosts your ability to negotiate and solve problems, so in other words: we become smarter!
- Memorizing new words and rules helps to strengthen the mental “muscle” improving overall memory, which means that we remember better lists, name, directions.
- Kids that grow up in a multi lingual environment have a stronger learning memory compared to those that are exposed to just one language.
- What about multi-tasking? Multilingual people are skilled at switching between two systems of speech, writing and structure so they learn how to switch from one job to another, easily. In time you may find yourself starting a sentence in one language and finishing it in another.
In addition to all those benefits, learning another language opens our mind to a new world, a new culture, a new history and stories.
If you are thinking that you want to start or you want to give this gift to your children, remember: it’s never too late.
I’m Italian, and I’ve been teaching in Australia for the past 3 years. I love what I do and I love sharing my language, my culture and my Italian recipes as well!

Testimonials from students of Elisa:
"How fortunate we have been to have Elisa as our Italian Language teacher."
"Elisa’s sensitive understanding, clarity, good humour and patience makes learning so much fun and even if we get some of our verb endings wrong we have no doubt we are in for a good time when we start making our way around central Italy in the coming weeks.”
